Western Colorado Doulas was created in 2003 by women who recognized the need in our community for continuous labor support. As well as being trained & certified doulas (certifications earned through ICEA), each of us are also certified childbirth educators with Mesa County Childbirth Education Association. M.C.C.E.A. is contracted with St. Mary's Hospital, and offers a variety of childbirth preparation courses. In teaching those classes, and especially when bringing the newly formed families back together for "birth reunions", we noted that all too often our couples expressed a need for greater support during childbirth. Many of them didn't realize prior to birth that, without the luxury of one-to-one nursing at our hospital, often the woman and her partner are left to labor alone while the nurse works with others in her care. This can leave the laboring couple feeling anxious and concerned. It is our desire to fill that missing link in the care of our couples, to protect their experience and birth memory. It is our privilege to offer that additional trained labor support that birth families are longing for. We look forward to working with you in your preparation of bringing your baby into the world.
